The ada regulations state that the operating parts of a faucet must be no higher than 48 from the ground if the area is free from obstructions. The maximum high reach is reduced to 46 when the reach over an obstruction is deeper than 10 to a maximum of 24.

When the reach depth is over 20 inches deep a reach range of 44 inches applies. Lavatories shall be mounted with the rim or counter surface no higher than 34 in 865 mm above the finish floor. A 48 inch high limitation is required for all accessories except those mounted over obstructions including lavatory fixtures which are up to 20 inches deep. If the clear floor space only allows forward approach to an object the maximum high forward reach allowed shall be 48 in 1220 mm.
